Last of the silverware to be handed out in cup and shield finals

image preview

The last of the trophies will be handed out by the Mayo League on Sunday afternoon when the Connacht Gold Cup and Shield finals take place in Milebush. With the league season coming to an end last weekend (with the exception of the three-way play off in the Welcome Inn League 2 for second place and relegation matters in Premier A) all eyes will be on Milebush on Sunday. For Westport United it could be a weekend of double celebration as their A side are going for the Mayo League treble when they take on Castlebar Celtic B in the final of the Connacht Gold Cup and their B team take on Iorras Aontaithe in the shield final.

‘Mayhem’ in Castlebar as brandished weapons brought cars to a halt

Four defendants were before a special sitting of Castlebar District Court on Monday for a brawl which occurred in Castlebar town where a claw hammer, hurley, and vice grip were brandished in the middle of the street, and criminal damage and assault was committed. Judge Kevin Kilrane said that this “mayhem” on the busy streets of the county town was a “total disgrace” and put decent people in fear.

A numbers of family members who were involved in a public spat on Linenhall Street with a man who they knew, on the morning of Tuesday March 23, were before Castlebar District Court this week.

Westport keep winning as others try to keep pace

Four games played, four wins, and 12 points on the table, it has been business as usual for Westport United since the Super League swung back into action in the past number of weeks. The defending champions were always going to be the team that everybody would have to chase, but even as few as four games in they look like no one will be able to step up to the mark to haul them in this season. There nearest challengers at the moment are Ballina Town, a side who really need to deliver the title or some form of silverware this season to give them something to show for their top of the table battling over the past number of seasons. On Sunday the Beleek Park men will host Iorras Aontaithe and if they fail to see off the Erris men they could see Ballina extend their lead at the top of the table from three to six points with only five games gone in the season.
